Dynamic vs Static QR Codes: What’s the Difference?

All QR codes look the same — a square of black-and-white dots — but under the hood there are two very different kinds. A static QR code has the destination baked in permanently. A dynamic QR code points at a short link you control, so you can change where it goes and see how it performs. Picking the right one before you print can save you a reprint later. Here’s the difference in plain English.
What is a static QR code?
A static QR code encodes your final destination directly — a URL, some text, a phone number — into the pattern itself. Once it’s generated and printed, that data is fixed forever. If the link changes, the code is dead and you have to make and print a new one.
Static codes are perfectly fine when the destination will never change and you don’t care about analytics: a Wi-Fi password on a wall, a plain link to your homepage, a one-off sticker.
What is a dynamic QR code?
A dynamic QR code doesn’t encode your final URL. Instead it encodes a short redirect link, and that link forwards scanners to wherever you point it. Because the printed code only ever contains the short link, you can:
- Change the destination any time — even after the code is printed and out in the world.
- Track every scan — location, device, browser and time — because each scan passes through your link first.
- Keep the code small and reliable — a short link makes a less dense, easier-to-scan pattern than a long URL.
Static vs dynamic: the quick comparison
- Editable after printing? Static: no. Dynamic: yes.
- Trackable scans? Static: no. Dynamic: yes — scans, locations, devices, times.
- Pattern density: Static grows with the URL length; dynamic stays small.
- Works forever offline of any service? Static: yes, it’s self-contained. Dynamic: relies on the redirect link staying live.
The trade-off is simple: static codes are self-contained but frozen; dynamic codes are flexible and measurable but depend on the short link continuing to work.
What’s actually inside each code
The difference shows up physically in the pattern. A QR code grows in “versions” — the more characters you encode, the more modules (dots) the grid needs. A static code carrying a long campaign URL like https://example.com/spring-2026/landing?src=poster&variant=b might need a 33×33 or 37×37 grid; a dynamic code carrying only a short link like scantraceqr.com/logger/aB3xK9 fits comfortably in a 25×25 one. Fewer, larger modules mean the code survives smaller print sizes, cheaper printing, and worse lighting.
That density difference is not cosmetic. Our print spec guide goes deeper, but the rule of thumb: the shorter the encoded text, the more forgiving the printed code. Dynamic codes are short by construction, so they start with an advantage before you’ve thought about size at all.
One more physical consequence: because the printed pattern of a dynamic code never changes, you can generate it once, hand it to your designer, and never touch the artwork again — every future edit happens on the server side, in the link settings.
When to use each
Use a static QR code when…
The content never changes and you don’t need analytics — a Wi-Fi join code, a plain vCard, or a permanent link you’re confident will never move.
Use a dynamic QR code when…
You’re running anything you want to measure or might update: marketing campaigns, product packaging, posters, business cards, menus, or event signage. Anywhere “which one worked?” or “can I change this later?” matters, dynamic wins.
A quick decision guide by use case

- Product packaging — dynamic. Packaging runs are printed months ahead; the landing page you want in month one is rarely the one you want in month nine.

- Event poster or conference slide — dynamic. Point it at the signup page today and the “thanks, replay here” page after the event ends.
- Wi-Fi password on the wall — static. It encodes the network credentials directly, no web link involved, and it should keep working if your internet provider’s DNS is down.
- vCard on a sign or flyer — either, but note a full static vCard makes a very dense pattern; a dynamic link to a contact page scans more reliably at small sizes.
Three myths worth clearing up
“Dynamic codes expire.” Some generators run free trials whose codes stop working after 14 days — that’s a pricing decision by those services, not a property of dynamic codes. A dynamic code works for as long as its redirect link stays live. ScanTraceQR links don’t have an expiry timer.
“People need an app to scan them.” Both kinds scan with any modern phone camera. The static/dynamic distinction is invisible to the scanner — the only difference they could notice is a millisecond redirect hop.

Already printed a static code?
There’s no way to convert ink: a printed static code will point at its baked-in URL forever. What you can do is stop the bleeding — make sure the URL it carries keeps resolving (keep the page live, or add a server-side redirect on your own site from that path to the new one). Then switch to a dynamic code for the next print run so you never repeat the problem. If the printed URL is on a domain you control, a redirect rule rescues it; if it pointed at a third-party page, the code is unfortunately a paperweight.
